Open Ear Hearing Aids
We have been carrying the Gn ReSound AIR 60 for a couple of years. Up until now there was really no competition in the high frequency hearing loss segment. The AIR 60 not only does the job, but does it better than anything that had come before. I would go on to say that, for the milder end of high frequency hearing loss, the ReSound AIR 60 is still the best choice. But what about those of us with a loss that exceeds the AIR 60 feedback management system? Siemens Acruis Life Wireless Mini-BTE! More Power To Fit More Losses
Siemens has upped the ante with the debut of the Acuris Life.
I have been wearing a pair for a few days and I'm thrilled! No feedback problemsThe Acuris Life Mini-BTEs don't show any more than my CICsI hear as well as or better than I do with my newest, best CICs I can turn these up or down, change to one of three programs, and due to the e2e wireless communication between the aids they always do the same thing. With the e2e wireless when one aids detects noise and cancels it the other aids acts in the same manner instantly which means total balance to the wearer. No longer do I wonder what is happening as one aid and then the other reacts to random sounds. Much more natural. I am thrilled with the fit. My ear canals had minor itching the first day but now feel OPEN and natural. All wonderful stuff but what makes these my new, most favorite hearing aids?? Most of you that have not had the pleasure of wearing hearing aids won't understand. But those that have worn hearing aids will be filled with amazement!I can drive around with the window down and hear conversation and the radio....I swear I feel younger when I do that! These new Acuris Life hearing aids have a wind noise reduction adjustment!! Want to talk to your friends as you play a round of golf when the wind blows? How about in the convertible or boat? I would say the wind noise now is about the same as it was, all those years ago, before I started wearing hearing aids. Check out What Advanced Hearing has to offer to help you hear better, more comfortably, and at an affordable price.
In Defense Of Price
How did hearing aids get so expensive anyway?
I understand that they have to be small, able to operate in a 'hostile-to-electronics' environment, sustain low power requirements to provide long battery life, fit like a glove, be continuously aware of the sound environment and adjust for it, and bring that one voice up to a level above the surrounding noise to allow us to discriminate each syllable uttered for total comprehension. Some hearing aids do all these things - at the same time even! Well, pretty close to all at the same time. Truly amazing! ... But still. Why so much money?
Here is the medium length answer: As the hearing aid industry's general state of technology has advanced in the last five years, the strides made to a better machine have gotten longer. Better hearing aids and software opened new avenues used to get hearing aids to the market place. Some of these avenues offer huge savings on purchasing the latest technology hearing aid . To understand how to save money on a hearing aid purchase first examine existing hearing aid price structure. Traditionally buying a hearing aid meant going through a sometimes lengthy process of sizing and sound adjustments. Lots of trips to and from where you bought them. Lots of time spent getting your hearing aids to the best they could be.... Now you can walk into a office and in less than an hour later walk out with a pair of hearing aids tuned and fit to near perfection. One visit and you are done! Now spend some time getting over the habit of saying "Huh??" and you are well on your way to reducing your spouse's stress level. Or, you could order a pair hearing aids over the internet and save hundreds of dollars. It is even easier, just fax or email your audiogram and they will take care of the rest. A couple of days later you receive your new hearing aids, take them out of the box and hear better. Want to continue to pre-pay for all that fitting and service that you won't use? Buy the aid only and pay for service only if you need it. Buy Un-Bundled! Unbundled hearing aid prices gives you the option of not paying for all the fitting and tuning associated with yesterdays hearing aids.
One caveat to all of this is the relationship between the hearing aid manufacturers and their customers, hearing aid dispensers and dispensing audiologists. The manufacturers go to great lengths to keep their customers happy. They can control who they sell hearing aids to. If a hearing aid dispenser sells hearing aids in such a manner to offend competing hearing aid dispensers. And those offended dispensers complain enough to the hearing aid manufacturer, that manufacturer may take action against the offending dispenser. And the point being...............?? You want to buy hearing aids over the internet and save tons of money?? Don't go back to your local dispenser and tell him/her about the wonderful deal you got on the internet, then ask her/him to match the price or adjust the hearing aid. As soon as someone does that the complaints start. It is a case of the established middlemen trying to continue to do traditional business unhampered by progress. Hearing Aids And Battery Power
Most hearing wearers, including myself, occasionally have questions about the batteries that power our hearing aids. Some of the most common are: 'Didn't I just change that battery?' Or 'I know I had some batteries, now where did I put them?' Over the years of wearing hearing aids here are my 'truisms on batteries.' First, never leave home without a spare battery. An easy one to fix...I just put a pack of batteries every where, glove box of all cars I drive or ride in, briefcase, shaving kit, wife's purse, desk drawer, night stand, and ditch bag on the boat. Second, change the battery before leaving on anything more important than grocery shopping. Clean your hearing aids at least twice a week and change the battery then. I almost never have a dead battery now that I have decided it is not that important to get the very last drop of power out of it, I save that for the car's gas tank! Third, make the battery's life easier and longer. Open the battery door when the aid is not in use. Keep the battery dry, if you sweat or live in a humid climate dry the battery and battery door a couple of times a day if needed. In a recent article in Newsweek Magazine Martha Irvine alerts us to the damage we can do to our ears using headphones. I have seen in my own practice this same trend of young people coming in for hearing tests with high frequency loss as a result. Now is the time to warn our children that their ears are not immune to hearing loss and the eventual wearing of hearing aids. But instead of purchasing your first set at age seventy it may be closer to thirty! Here are some excerpts from the article..... Headphone Use May Worsen Hearing Loss By MARTHA IRVINE, AP National Writer And researchers fear that the growing popularity of portable music players and other items that attach directly to the ears — including cell phones — is only making it worse. "It's a different level of use than we've seen in the past," says Robert Novak, director of clinical education in audiology at Purdue University in Indiana. "It's becoming more of a full-day listening experience, as opposed to just when you're jogging." Increasingly, Novak says he's seeing too many young people with "older ears on younger bodies" — a trend that's been building since the portable Walkman made its debut a few decades back. Usually, it means they've lost the ability to hear higher frequencies, evidenced at times by mild ear-ringing or trouble following conversations in noisy situations. "It may be that we're seeing the tip of the iceberg now," says Dr. John Oghalai, director of The Hearing Center at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, who's treating more of this age group. "I would not be surprised if we start to see even more of this." Noise-induced hearing loss happens any number of ways, from attending noisy concerts and clubs to using firearms or loud power tools and even recreational vehicles (snowmobiles and some motorcycles are among the offenders). Is Hearing Industry Listening?
With more ways than ever to communicate, is the hearing aid industry getting feedback from a wider sample of their customers? Are hearing aid designers incorporating the features we, as users, find helpful? In the case of 'beginning hearing loss from noise damage' I give the Industry good marks. The Gn ReSound AIR 60+ is a product leader due to dispensers trying them on people with high frequency losses that exceeded the designers recommendations and reporting the successful results back to the manufacturer. As a result we are seeing most of the leading hearing aid manufacturers scrambling to catch up with Gn ReSound and offer open ear canal products of their own. If you have a mild loss or a high frequency loss an open ear canal hearing aid may the right choice. Like reading glasses that are worn only when needed these new devices help people understand speech in areas that were troublesome before. The process is simpler too. The open-canal hearing aids can be worn the same day you decide to try them rather than waiting at least a week for a custom made hearing aid. Easier, less expensive, ability to test drive, and they work...What are you waiting for??
